Some types of primary brainstem tumors include glioma, meningioma, and acoustic neuroma. The pons (part of metencephalon) lies between the medulla oblongata and the midbrain. Focal brain stem glioma occurs in one area or is contained within a small part of the brain stem. Types of brain stem gliomas The 2 main types of gliomas that occur in children are focal or low-grade gliomas and diffuse gliomas. The pons serves as a connector between the cerebrum and the cerebellum The medulla is a passage for nerves. Most brain stem gliomas are pontine gliomas, which start in the part of the brain stem called the pons. A paper published in 2020 (Flemming et al) found that brainstem location is a strong predictor of hemorrhage. ![]() Studies have indicated that brainstem lesions are more likely to present with an initial hemorrhage and are more likely to rebleed. Brain tumor: A primary brain tumor can develop in any region of the brain and cancer from elsewhere in the body can spread to the brain. The pons and medulla are part of the brainstem. Approximately 20 of cavernous malformations are located in the brainstem. The aneurysm can compress structures in the brainstem, may impair blood supply, or may cause severe effects if it bleeds. Brain aneurysm: A brain aneurysm can affect blood vessels in any location of the brain, including the blood vessels near the brainstem. It is approximately 2.5cm long, composed of transverse fibres. Movement disorders: Several movement disorders, including Parkinson’s disease, are associated with dysfunction and degeneration of certain areas of the brainstem, such as the substantia nigra and the red nucleus. Pons: Located anterior to the cerebellum, the Pons connects the medulla oblongata to the midbrain. It is responsible for many vital functions of life, such as breathing, consciousness, blood pressure, heart rate, and sleep. It is composed of 3 sections in descending order: the midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata. This can produce life-threatening effects, such as breathing impairment. The brainstem is the structure that connects the cerebrum of the brain to the spinal cord and cerebellum. Increased intracranial pressure: When there is swelling in the brain, such as due to a head trauma, a stroke, or an infection, it can place pressure on the brainstem, affecting its function.Multiple sclerosis (MS): The white matter of the brainstem can be affected by demyelination in MS, leading to symptoms that may be reversible, progressively worse over years, or permanent, depending on the type of MS.
